We reached Bryce Canyon late in the afternoon on Sunday, August 9, 2026, greeted by quite rainy and overcast weather. After quickly setting up our tents at the North Campground, we took a short walk over to Bryce Point. Unfortunately, we were caught in a strong downpour right as we walked toward the overlook. Despite the soaking rain, the sweeping scenic view of the massive amphitheater filled with glowing red rock was deeply satisfying and entirely worth the chill.
The rain was still falling when we returned to our campsite, but as soon as it let up, we eagerly seized the chance to prepare a warm dinner. Later, at around 9:00 PM, another heavy downpour hit, making us worry for a moment that water might seep into our tents. Thankfully, everything held up fine, and the intense rain stopped after about half an hour, allowing us to rest peacefully.
Hiking Among the Hoodoos
On Monday morning, we enjoyed a quiet breakfast, packed up our damp tents, and loaded everything into the car. We then drove to Sunrise Point within Bryce Canyon to begin our morning trek.
- Into the Amphitheater: Descending right into the heart of the canyon offered a magnificent, immersive perspective. Walking among the towering formations, Yolly even remarked that it looked as though God had playfully sculpted intricate sand towers across the desert.
- The Trail Challenge: The nearly four-hour hike taking us down into the canyon and back up was a true physical challenge, a vivid reminder of the grueling hike we had tackled a few days prior at the Grand Canyon. Yet, every step of the way, the astonishing beauty of the towering hoodoos and vibrant, red-colored rock formations made our tired feet feel completely worthwhile.
The Drive to Moab
By nearly 1:00 PM, we hit the road toward our next major destination: the adventure hub of Moab.
- Landscape & Weather: Along the four-hour drive, the weather shifted constantly from bright sunshine to sudden rain showers. The scenic views along the highway were mesmerizing, with long stretches reminding us of the vast desert landscapes we had traversed earlier near Monument Valley.
- Team Driving: Steven and I shared driving duties once again, taking turns behind the wheel to navigate the changing weather and long stretches of Utah highway.
Unwinding in Moab
Upon arriving in Moab, we went straight to our accommodation for the next two nights: Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown.
- Lodge Life: It is a comfortable, simple lodge equipped with all the modern amenities we could need, including a refreshing swimming pool right on the property. After days of setting up and taking down camp, we felt a wonderful wave of relief knowing we wouldn’t have to sleep in our tents for the next two nights!
- Evening Plans: After taking a satisfying dinner at the Moab Grill, we headed back to our rooms to rest up. We are turning in early tonight, getting fully energized for a big day of hiking and discovering the incredible desert landscapes of Moab tomorrow, before eventually pushing onward to our final destination, the Black Canyon.
